Eagles DeSean Jackson On Pace to Challenge Team Records
DeSean Jackson is on pace for 80 receptions and more than 1,300 yards this year.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson is on pace to shatter some of his previous career highs, despite a lack of the long, explosive receptions that he’s known for. Through four games, Jackson has 20 receptions for 333 yards and a touchdown, a sign that he’s making strides as a better overall receiver, able to be productive even when the deep ball isn’t there.
Jackson’s numbers through a quarter of the year have him on pace for 80 receptions, 1,332 yards and four touchdowns. The first two would be career highs by far, while the touchdown total would leave him 1.25 touchdowns shy of the average over his first four seasons. Jackson’s previous career highs in receptions and yards are 62 and 1,156, respectively.
The Eagles haven’t had a wide receiver catch 80 passes in a season since Irving Fryar caught 86 passes in 1997 to follow up his 88 reception season in 1996. Running back Brian Westbrook caught 90 passes in 2007.
Jackson’s pace for yards would leave him second in Eagles history to Mike Quick, who piled up 1,409 receiving yards in 1983. Fryar is the only other Eagle to go over the 1,300 yard mark, with 1,316 in 1997.
Jackson had struggled to adjust after opposing defenses began taking away his cherished deep passing plays by dropping safeties 30 or more yards down the field to keep him underneath, but this season he’s done a better job of finding those open spaces in the intermediate passing game.
Despite his hot pace, so far Jackson has only been a topic of conversation for the wrong reasons, after appearing to give up on a route while signaling for a pass interference call during a 27-6 loss to the Cardinals. While everyone is used to seeing the big plays from Jackson and his smaller, but more consistent contributions are going a bit unnoticed, it’s a sign he’s taking the steps necessary to be a more complete player for the Eagles.
It’s that more complete player that could justify the five-year, $51 million contract Jackson received in the offseason.
